This panel was set up to be taken out and transported in a van to shows. The ducts could be left hanging for a weekend, and a short pair of ducts fitted on for the show display. Most of the time, this panel did a good job keeping the kitchen warm in a normally cold house. After that solar business closed in Feb. 1983, it was patched on to 2 other houses in the next 10 years.

This is a typical residential installation. Sunmaster was unique in its time, based on glass vacuum tubes rather than normal glazing. These proved especially efficient and durable. However, the manufacturing plant in Ithaca New York appears to have shut down several years ago.

This was the largest installation done by the company i worked for in Denver during 1983. I did not actually work on the installation, as we had a full crew already. My role in the company drifted first into engineering, then into accounting and computers. These systems were expensive, and by late 1983 it became obvious the company would not be able to continue in business much longer, so i cut to part-time in early 1984, which ended up being no time.

Coronis of Longmont CO made perhaps the best solar air panels ever. They looked good, and inside was a special patented louver design that performed very well.

This company was an unusual multilevel. Many design tricks were incorporated into their air panels. There are two layers of fiberglass glazing in the front. The honeycomb inside was actually one-inch strips of fiberglass put in as spacers to keep the two layers separate. These systems performed very well, as they were simple. Air was pulled through the panels by a fan on the inside of the house. Only two four-inch (standard duct size) holes needed to be cut through the outside wall. Vertically mounted solar panels can perform well, and you don't have to worry about them overheating in the summer or bearing snow loads in the winter.

Heat from this porch was routed through the attic to a back room that had always been difficult to heat. A simple thermostat control technically made this an active system.

Near Pueblo, CO 1982. Lasted maybe 2 years. Note that the sides of the panels are wood -- this had been up for about 6 months at the time the photo was taken, and there was already brown gunk on the insides of the glazings.

This was installed in 1982. The lights dimmed in this house every time the system turned on. There is a convicted con man out there still promoting this type of system! They haven't improved much. Good example of an idea that should work, but doesn't.

This type of system is simply absurd. Tracking components tend to break, it's all vulnerable to wind, and then there's all the added plumbing inside. Note the expansion tank hanging off the left end. That's yet another thing to go wrong.

This was government subsidized, and reputedly cost $20,000 -- not counting the free labor put in by students at the local community college. There is simply no reason to spend this much on a system, even as a demonstration.

All the solar greenhouse stuff generated more heat than was needed, so heat dumping vents were put in. For a while some expensive phase change salt tubes were put in underneath this greenhouse for heat storage, but they didn't last very well. Each time one ruptured it was a real mess.
